Local confetti, liquorice and now... champagne!

One of Danish Island Wedding’s guiding principles is that we should always source locally if we can. We even make our own biodegradable confetti – Louise and her mother Lone, dry suitable locally harvested flowers (hydrangeas and dahlias are among their favourites), and have them ready for use in baskets, crafted on the island or found at local flea markets. They are lovely - and they are good for the environment.

For some time now, we have also been offering our couples and their guests organic liquorice sweets handmade by Hattesens Konfektfabrik in Claus Hattesen’s production facility by the harbour in Ærøskøbing (just 300m from our Old Merchant’s House). Danes are obsessed with liquorice and eat tons of the stuff – they consume more “slik” (sweets or candy) than anyone else in the world. Liquorice (lakrids in Danish) is taken very seriously – and no one takes it more seriously than Claus. He spent years perfecting the recipe – and his “lakrids konfekt” is now widely regarded as the best in Denmark. And we are delighted to introduce it to our couples – it is fantastic stuff.

And now we are trialling a champagne-class sparkling white wine from Funen (the next island to Ærø, where the main ferries go to). We had been looking for a top-quality Danish sparkling white wine for literally years, and then by chance, we met Helle and Jacob, who run Stokkebye. It is a pretty little vineyard between Kerteminde and Nyborg, and the couple are dedicated and uncompromising when it comes to quality. Their sparkling white wine is made using the traditional champenoise method, and is named “Stella”, after their daughter. We love it, and the first couples to try it have been really enthusiastic too, so it’s here to stay at Danish Island Weddings!
